Introduction
Twelve miles north of Lancaster, the Historic Smithton Inn stands apart from all other inns in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Smithton is an historic little inn that has been family run for 236 years and is surrounded by the verdant rolling countryside of Lancaster County with its streams, covered bridges, and wonderful sunshine. The inn is built of stone, surrounded by flowers, and stands on a hill overlooking the Ephrata Cloister, a Protestant monastery that is now a museum dating from 1723.
Smithton's common rooms are not to be overlooked. The first floor has a Great Room, a library, and a picturesque room where a full country breakfast is served. These rooms all have fireplaces that are used from November to April, weather permitting. Oil lamps are lighted in the windows at dusk. The Inn is furnished with antiques and hand made furniture appropriate to the period.
Smithton itself is an historic site that took over 20 years to restore.
The restoration was done with the same kind of hand tools with which the Inn was built, for the sake of authenticity. Now it has all the modern amenities and a very special selection of period furnishings.
Historic Smithton Inn offers everything from generous but cozy guest rooms with working fireplaces and private baths to a luxurious three-room suite. Guest rooms are picturesque and provide a romantic setting for visitors.
Innkeeper Dorothy Graybill is Pennsylvania Dutch and was born just one mile from the inn. Numerous decorative influences are the product of Dorothy's architect partner who has used the motifs of the Eighteenth Century Germans and those of the Ephrata Cloister. People who were members of the Cloister built and operated the Inn. Hand worked timbers with mortise and tenon joints, secured with locust trunnels, are commonplace in the building and its restoration. The floors and woodwork are hand worked, as well as some of the ceramics in the bathrooms.
The Smithton Dahlia Gardens surround much of the property, blooming from June through October.
The gardens are furnished with settees, chairs, and tables, and feature a pond that is home to a family of koi fish, a great delight to our younger guests.
Lancaster County is the original home of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Today travelers can visit this place, the present home of the Mennonite, Amish, and Brethren living in the old tradition with horse and wagon. Their farm markets, home businesses, and country auctions are open to all who wish to visit them. Lancaster County offers a bewildering variety of activities and places to visit including historic sites and antique malls. The county's restaurants are picturesque and unusual, serving everything from cuisine to simple farm fare.
