History of the Inn
Broadlawns was built in 1881 by Stephen Paxson Darlington, member of
a prominent West Chester family and partner in the firm of Hoopes Brothers and
Darlington. The company manufactured wheels for many of the Conestoga Wagons
that took pioneers to the 19th century western frontier. Judge McElree, member
of another prominent West Chester family, purchased the property from Mr.
Darlington in 1915 and later named it Broadlawns.
In an 1881 article written
at the time of its construction, Broadlawns was touted to be "a grand house
and one of the most expensive and beautiful in the Borough."
The current occupants, Bill & Dorene Winters, are the fifth family to
reside at Broadlawns.
