Welcome to the The Barker House
This brick encased log house, built in 1794 by Richard Knight, is the second oldest structure in New Oxford and was a home of the prominent Hersh Family for over 150 years.
In June 1863 a Confederate brigade under the command of General John B. Gordon passed through Gettysburgmon a march to Wrightsville. Advancing east on the York road, they stopped in New Oxford. Gordon and his officers entered the home of George and Nancy Hersh, now The Barker House. Mrs. Hersh refuseing to acknowledge the General, went upstairs to her bedroom leaving the servents to serve food to the officers. Here General Gorden meet with his staff and officers to plan their approch to York.
