Lancaster County Area Attraction Information
|
Your trip to the heart of the Amish Country should include a visit to the
quaint villages of Intercourse, Bird-In-Hand and Strasburg situated among the rolling farmlands of eastern Lancaster County.
Intercourse was founded in 1754 and was formerly called "Cross Keys" after an old tavern. It is located on the Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340).
This bustling little town boasts "100 shops, restaurants, galleries and
interesting places." The People's Place is an excellent source of
information about the Amish & Mennonites. The Kitchen Kettle Village which
houses 32 shops, is home to the Kitchen Kettle, a PA Dutch Jam & Jelly
making shop since 1954.
The little village of Bird-in-Hand is also very popular, with a busy
farmers' market, a variety of craft and gift shops, and the Old Village
Store, one of the oldest hardware stores in the country. The town was
established in the 1730s during the construction of the Old Philadelphia
Pike and was named after a local inn.
Named for Strasbourg, France and founded in the early 18th century by the
French Huguenots, Strasburg today is a charming village with beautiful old stone and log homes. A destination for train lovers, Strasburg offers model train layouts at the Choo Choo Barn and the National Toy Train Museum, retired locomotives from days gone by at the Rail Road Museum of Pennsylvania, and rides through Amish country in restored railroad cars at the Strasburg Rail Road.
