Grand Historical Home
While Tall Ships yet plied the Columbia River and salmon runs were plentiful,
Eben Tallant and his brother, Nathan Tallant, came to Astoria to build a
salmon packing cannery.
Andrew Ferguson designed the Eben Tallant family residence in the Richardson
Shingle style. Features of the home are: A bullet turret, inset balconies,
open staircase, bay windows.
|
|
A Northwest tower now capped with an open balcony, makes one feel as a
Captain on the prow of a ship as the house steers toward the Columbia River
mouth. The Tallant home is now owned by the Maxwells and is known as
Grandview Bed & Breakfast.
This lovely, Victorian, hillside town, at the mouth of the mighty Columbia
River, dates back to the arrival of John Jacob Astor's fur trading company
in 1811. The fur traders' fort sat on a rise in what is now the eastern
portion of Astoria's downtown district. Today, the friendly and very
walkable downtown area is filled with shops, galleries, antiques,
restaurants, museums and spectacular views of the river and its passing
parade of ships.
