Lousiville was formally located in 1834 in the township of
Nimishillen (1809). However, the first pioneers arrived in 1802. It
is believed that the township's name was derived from the Indian
word "tree" -Misilla - as Black Elder grew abundantly in the area.
Louisville's first "bed and breakfast" came into existence in 1806.
Throughout the early 1800's many settlers of European descent located
in Louisville. Among the early citizens came a large number of
French and German. They, with the help of a French architect, built
a Gothic-style church which is, today, in the National Historic
Register. It is named St. Louis, after the king of France.
In 1849 a French settler named Julliard was attracted to the
California gold rush and returned east with gold. The Charles
Julliard home was built in 1872 and it, too, is in the Historic
National Registry. It is believed the Julliard family brought the
first piano to Louisville, testifying to their love of music.
The Julliard School of Music in New York City was established after
Charles Julliard's death, as he had bequeathed in his will.
Tours of the home are available by arrangement.
