History

Tourists flock here to enjoy the nation's largest privately funded historic district, especially to Schiller Park and its open-air Shakespeare performances. Brick streets, wrought-iron fences, and not-exactly-German architecture create the area's distinctive look including buildings with Queen Anne and Italianate features, story-and-a-half brick cottages, and Dutch Doubles. Yards are small, but German Village residents take great pride in their elaborate gardens that are open to the public in the annual Haus und Garten Tour.

Germans immigrating to America in the mid-1800s formed a prosperous settlement in Columbus, but by the 1950s the area was in severe decline. The German Village Society worked to restore houses and businesses that are now on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights include devouring cream puffs at Schmidt's Sausage Haus, a visit to the nearby Fudge Haus (the best house in the village!), and browsing The Book Loft, the Golden Hobby Shop, and Helen Winnemore's gift shop. Franklin Art Glass Studios on Sycamore gave Tiffany a run for its money back in the day and gives demonstrations on the art today. Stop in and order a custom window!

Historic German Village has no shortage of old-fashioned hangouts, the kind of exposed-brick-and-long-wooden-bar charm that makes the neighborhood so comforting. The Beck Tavern is the most out-of-the-way, quietly nestled in the center of the Village for imbibers who prefer a more easygoing pace. The High Beck hops on High Street, featuring live music on weekends. The Thurman Cafe is the center of the bustling Thurman Avenue strip, dishing out great wings and famous burgers with the neighborhood suds. Club 185 has been around for decades and features exposed brick walls, a long, dark bar, a tin ceiling and lots of mirrors, plus memorabilia of times past.
