Bass Lake Taverne and the adjoining Bailey House have a long and interesting history. Edward Durrell, the founder of Union Fork and Hoe, owned the buildings along with 2500 acres. His plans included a vision for a golf and equestrian community that never came to pass. He did build a golf course, which was designed by noted Scottish golf course architect Bertie Way. Way also designed Firestone South and Mayfield Country Club.
The Bailey House was built in 1832 as a farmhouse and served as a stagecoach stop. Beams from a barn on the Bailey property were used in the 1964 construction of the Taverne room of what was once called the Gilded Cock Taverne. The main dining room is paneled in solid cherry wood harvested and milled from the property. Durrell displayed his collection of antique lamps and called it the Lamp Room. The collections of lamps are now displayed in a museum in Michigan. The ironic thing of Durrell's interest in lamps was that he was legally blind most of his adult life.

Located in the country atmosphere of Chardon. Casually sophisticated dining amid fireplaces or on a charming courtyard. The menu features steaks, chops, seafood, wild game, and homemade soups and desserts. Extend your stay in the country with a visit to the Bass Lake Inn, located behind the taverne and adjacent to Chardon Lakes golf course. All twelve rooms offer the comfort of a fireplace, Jacuzzi and kitchenette.
At one time the main dining room was in the Bailey House that was located in the dry township of Chardon while the Gilded Cock Tavern was in Munson Township where alcohol could be served. Harry Nester a friend and crafty attorney circumvented the problem by physically attaching the properties with a connecting passageway. Problem solved.
