2/9/2004 - If you've seen the movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's," you'll recall Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) lived in a NYC walkup apartment converted from a city townhouse. Whenever I think of 1871 House, I'm reminded of the winding staircase in the movie with apartments on every floor. At one time in its storied past, 1871 House served the same purpose, except now its former apartments are elegant rooms at a quiet and cozy inn. It's very romantic for couples and quiet and secure for singles and families. In one of the nicer neighborhoods in the city, the 1871 House is convenient to all sorts of amenities, the bus & subway, shops & businesses, even Bloomingdale's, are all are a short walk away. Within one block are several restaurants and grocery stores, some of which are open 24 hours. For the best bagels, try The Bread Factory in the same block on Lexington. Traveling alone, I always felt safe, even when out walking at night. For me, staying at 1871 House is SO much better than a city hotel, no matter how upscale. You feel like you live in the city, not just passing through. The prices are competitive with 3 and 4 star hotels in NYC. I stayed at one of those "posh" hotels on Central Park South. The room was nice but so small I could barely turn around. I also stayed at a nationwide chain hotel in NYC and was unpleasantly surprised at how poorly kept the facilities were. From what I've seen in "Sex and the City," the room decor at the 1871 House rivals those in the Stanhope Fifth Avenue. True, there's no room service at the 1871 House, but then, if the city loses power, you don't have to climb 22 stories to get to your room! The innkeepers, Warren & Lia Raum, are friendly & helpful without being intrusive. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I visit New York. For a "Home away from Home" experience, or, if your home's like mine, a MUCH NICER Home away from Home, visit the 1871 House and stay a while! A guest from Alexandria, Virginia, USA

I stayed here on a whim and dearly hope that I'm able to again, it was absolutely magical. I felt as though I was coming home at the end of a tiring day. My room was so welcoming and comfortable, and completely transported me from the fast pace of the city. The old floor boards, antique furniture and decor were beautiful and charming. As if that wasn't enough, I had the good fortune of staying in the Garden Room which felt like a little oasis, with the smell of tea roses and mint. This is a wonderful place for anyone looking for a retreat at the end of the day, to a different time and place.

We have stayed at the 1871 house on several occasions, each time in a different room and have loved it every time. It seems expensive to someone from the UK but as prices go in Central Manhattan it is value for money. The location - fantastic so much to see as soon as you walk out the door and only a few blocks from Central Park and 5th Ave. So much freedom to come and go with none of the formality and impersonal feel of a hotel. The bed and pillows are so comfy and the bed linen is the most beautiful I have seen. The decor is subtle, romantic, simple and relaxing. We had a vase full of roses on our arrival. We were able to cook our evening meal in the tiny kitchenette if we felt inclined though with so many amazing delis on the door step who needs to cook?
This place is a gem!

1871 is the perfect place to stay when visiting New York for a short or long stay. My room was gorgeously decorated with high ceilings and deliciously soft pillows and bed linen!! Even a darling little kitchenette!! We were in heaven. The location is fabulous and only a few blocks from Central Park with easy access to the subway system so you can get practically anywhere relatively fast. The location is super safe and there are great deli's, cafes and restaurants at your doorstep...not to mention the wonderful shopping locations. You can hire bikes and zip around the streets to save you time on foot too. Highly recommend

Our Australian family of 4 recently stayed at 1871 House. We loved it. Our three rooms, the Madison Suite was just lovely. Great that each of our teenagers had their own space to retreat to. The staff were incredibly helpful. It felt like a home. The hotel is in a fantastic central position for getting around town - particularly for the teenagers to do a bit of roaming on their own - it's almost impossible to get lost.

If I could fault 1871 House at all - it would just be to say that you need to keep a little energy in reserve after being out all day - to get up the stairs to the Madison Suite. But once you are there - it's an oasis.

I recently returned from a lovely stay at the 1871 House and highly recommend it to any experienced traveler. The 1871 House is very low key and for a traveler who likes to come and go as they please this is the perfect place. I felt as though I had been given the key to my very own New York City apartment and for a week I felt like a native New Yorker! I stayed in the Rear Library on the backside of the house which overlooked a lovely garden terrace below (I recommend this room to anyone booking.) The location of the 1871 House can't be beat. I was within walking distance to Central Park, 5th Avenue and of course my favorite, Bloomingdales! Thank you Warren and Lia for a wonderful stay and I hope to see you again next year!

We just completed a wonderful stay at 1871 House. It was perfect. Fabulous location close to many subway lines and right on the best bus routes. Great restaurants and shops nearby and just a few minutes walk to Central Park. 1871 House is spacious, quiet, and very clean. This is anything but a hotel room. This is the perfect comfortable sanctuary after busy days exploring the City. We were completely thrilled and cannot wait to return to 1871 House. Six days was not enough.

Good stay in perfect neighborhood

We spent a bunch of money on a bigger suite for 5 nights during the worst heat wave NYC has had in a long time in early June. The weather was awful! The Madison suite was cool -- both literally because of the two air conditioning units, and because it was our own little pad in a beautiful neighborhood. We were en route to Iceland for vacation and needed a weigh station. A place to start our vacation, get some of the time change under our belts and enjoy the craziness of NY with our two young children. The Madison suite had everything we needed and when you figure that 5 of us stayed there for about $600 a night then you know it's a pretty good deal. I could not have gotten us two hotel rooms for that price. And with the kitchen we saved even more money by being able to have breakfast and sometimes lunch at "home." It was fun to have the apartment and feel like we lived in the neighborhood for the brief time we were there. We were met with lovely people who worked there. Helpful and polite. The young woman who greeted us on our first night even offered to help carry our heavy suitcases up the flight of stairs. So we have zero complaints there.
