History Of The Inn
Built in 1886 by railroad tycoon George Cuyler Preston, this delightful Santa Fe B&B is very much a part of New Mexico tourism. Standing as one of the few architectural reminders of the frontier days of the Wild West, the inn is the only historically-plaqued hotel in Santa Fe New Mexico. It is also one of only two known Queen Anne-style structures in the entire state. Its very design lends ambiance to romantic weekend getaways.
Preston must have enjoyed the Madeleine's turrets, steep-pitched pressed metal roofs and the ornamental detailing of the graceful Queen Anne style. Imagine him beneath the parlor's domed ceiling making business decisions over whisky and cigars with his influential friends. Perhaps their wives chatted in the comfortable sitting rooms, warmed by two Edwardian fireplaces, or sipped lemonade outside on the spacious front porch.
Over the years the inn has had many owners, from Santa Fe's first alternative healer, when it was known as "the Palace of Health", to the resident who fed so many birds that the house then became known as "The House of Birds". While the names have changed over the past 100 years, the house retains its original design and elegance, making it one of Santa Fe's most beloved bed & breakfasts.
