Introduction
So close to Atlantic City...
...yet so charmingly far away.
Welcome to the Historic House of Dr. Jonathan Pitney... the most important individual to live at the Jersey Shore in the first half of the 19th century. Physician, intellectual, public servant, educator and businessman, the good Doctor is known as the Father of Atlantic City, the constant lobbyist responsible for the construction of the Absecon Lighthouse, and the leader of the movement in 1837 to create Atlantic County.
Listed on the National Historic Register!
Dr. Jonathan Pitney's turn-of-the-century home has been lovingly restored into a bed and breakfast inn with a warm and friendly atmosphere. This home was originally built by Samuel Reed in 1799. Dr. Pitney purchased the colonial-style home in 1833, but when he added on in 1848, the addition was built in an Italianate style. (Click here for more history)
The Dr. Jonathan Pitney House rooms are tastefully furnished with period antiques. Two bedrooms, the dining room, kitchen and maid quarters are in colonial decor, and four bedrooms and the Granville Room are in Victorian vogue settings. The Pitney House specializes in intimate weddings and receptions.
Take a step back into the past as each of the Pitney House's six guest rooms includes its own private bath, most with authentic claw-foot tubs. Imagine the picturesque beauty and romance of nestling in front of a cozy fireplace with that special someone in your own private room. The ambiance of a by-gone era has been captured in each room for your relaxation and a rejuvenating stay.
The Guest Quarters, located on the west side of the Commonyard, consist of four beautifully decorated suites that we have harmonized in a treasure-trove of antiques, collectibles and today's conveniences. Step back in time, yet enjoy the warmth of the fireplace or the aromatic scents that waft in the room from the breeze of the ceiling fans.
Breakfast is a special time at the Pitney House and has become a trademark of our Inn. While you are sleeping, the scent of homemade muffins wafting throughout the house sets you in the mood for a sumptuous gourmet breakfast that will greet you in the morning.
The historic Dr Jonathan Pitney House is located only a few miles from Atlantic City's casinos and new Convention Center. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway weekend, a delightful special time touring local wineries, the St. Paddy's Pub tour, casino entertainment and gaming, or murder mystery weekends, the Pitney House is the place to be.
