History of the Inn...
Paralleling the rise of Ocean Grove itself in 1869, the Central Avenue House's history and tradition traces back to the town's founding as well. Originally called "The Auditorium House," the inn was one of many hotels that immediately sprang up to accommodate summer travelers who converged each year to attend Methodist "Camp Meetings." Jennifer, the current owner, is proud that her family has been part of the Ocean Grove hospitality tradition dating to 1898 when her great-grandmother, Cora Mae Applegate bought the inn.
Ocean Grove's attributes that attracted the original settlers, a safe, beautiful village nestled between two lakes and bounded by the ocean, are the same attributes that attract visitors today. Even more accessible today by train via the North Jersey Coast Line out of the New York City metro area, (1.5 hours) or by car from the Philadelphia area and south (1.5 hours) via Route 195, NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, Ocean Grove is a favorite seaside destination.
The Central Avenue House has a devoted following of guests who come back every summer. because they're staying with family. Beginning with Cora Mae, Myrtle, JoAnne and now Jennifer, a vacation at the Central Avenue House is truly like stepping back in time. Each one of the seven guest rooms is lovingly decorated with chintz, antiques and family heirlooms passed down from generations. Each guest room also has its own sink, ceiling fan and A/C. Come to the Central Avenue House and join the family!
