Introduction
Tucked in the foothills of the White Mountains and on the northern shores of pristine Newfound Lake is the Town of Hebron, New Hampshire. Home to 494 year-round residents, it’s the quintessential New England village with historic homes and town buildings surrounding a gorgeous common. The entire village district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just yards from the common is the circa 1820 Meadow Wind farm, once a working farm and now a small bed and breakfast. On Meadow Wind's other sides is a spectacularly beautiful New Hampshire Audubon wildlife sanctuary, all once part of this almost two-centuries-old farm, comprised of woods and meadows bounded by the meandering Cockermouth River and stretching to the lake shore on Hebron marsh and bay.
The entire main house and ell of this classic connected farm have been restored by your hosts, Karen and Pete Carey, only the fifth generation of Meadow Wind owners since Captain Enos Ferrin first built the place. Historic colors, vintage wall coverings, plaster and beadboard walls, wood beamed and tin ceilings, and period furniture combine to provide the flavor of yesteryear and comfort of a simpler time. Two massive barns today look much as they did 50 years ago when they last housed livestock, farm equipment, and harvest and feed stores.
Breakfast
Coffee and tea are always brewing in the country kitchen, where a sumptuous, healthy buffet breakfast is served each morning. Share breakfast with other guests in the dining room, or start your day at your own pace on one of the farm’s three porches, including the spacious veranda overlooking the main garden, field, and long meadow to the Cockermouth River and wooded mountains beyond.
Meadow Wind's natural beauty is enhanced by an amazing array of wildlife. In the stillness of dawn or dusk, you may spy moose and deer foraging in the meadow and lake marsh. You'll likely see loons, eagles, mergansers, ospreys, and great blue herons fishing ... beavers at work and otters at play in the river and lake. After dark, listen for the cries of fishers and howls of coyotes hunting ... and the beautiful song of the loons echoing from the lake.
Whether you come to take in nature's sights and sounds, swim or boat on Newfound's Lake's crystal clear waters, hike or ski the White Mountains, or hunt for antiques at area shops and auctions, Meadow Wind offers beautiful, elegantly simple, relaxing accommodations in the middle of it all.
The circa 1820 farmhouse is elegantly simple. Painted wide plank floors, plaster walls and ceilings in an array of historic colors, exposed beams, hand-carved fireplace mantles, antique furniture, claw-footed tubs, and braided and Persian rugs underscore the farm’s rich history.
At the same time, amenities such as a Hot Springs hot tub, outside shower, subfloor radiant heating, cable and satellite television, and wireless internet service bring modern comforts.
Downstairs in the main farmhouse is the living room where you will marvel at the extraordinary tin ceiling, be warmed by the fireplace stove, be drawn into the inviting couches, and watch your favorite television programs and movies.
An elegant dining room is centered on a Delft chandelier and mahogany dining table set for six guests. For those who prefer less formal dining, choose the huge back screened porch, side porch, or breakfast porch.
Accommodations
In all, there are six guest bedrooms, all but the Loft named after mountains around Hebron and Newfound Lake.
Meadow Wind’s three upstairs bedrooms and their two adjoining bathrooms boast breathtaking views of Hebron common, its quintessentially New England church, town offices, and homes, as well as views of the meadow, forests, and White Mountains foothills beyond.
The ell includes two cozy downstairs guest rooms (former servants' quarters) and the second story Loft now transformed into a beautiful, spacious apartment with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room with gorgeous northern and southern views.
