Squam Lake
"When the movie makers went looking for a place to be Golden Pond, they found everything they wanted right here." That's how Yankee Magazine described Squam Lake, setting for "On Golden Pond" in a 1984 article.
Golden pond exists only in our hearts and imaginations. But Squam Lake, New Hampshire's second largest lake and site for the filming of the movie, captures the essence of any vacationer's dream - unspoiled beauty, clear fresh waters, magnificent mountain scenery, and ample opportunities for the active and not so active visitor. It is a combination unequalled in New Hampshire.
For the outdoorsman the Squam Lakes(there's a Big Squam and a Little Squam) offer 65 miles of shoreline to explore, more than 30 islands to circumvent, and 10 miles of open waterway to sail, motor or paddle in. There is outstanding bass, salmon and trout fishing in the cool, crystal clear waters.
Off the lake one will find miles of hiking and mountain biking trails crisscrossing the Squam Range. Excellent golf courses and tennis courts are close by. And for the less sportsminded there are numerous gift shops and antique shops as well as dining spots which range from casual to gourmet. Most of New Hampshire's major attractions are less than an hour from Squam, which makes the area a perfect home base for day trips.
