Introduction
NESTLED IN the quaint mill city of Claremont, New Hampshire, in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region, the Goddard Mansion is an 18 room circa 1905 English Mansion built by Frank P. Maynard, a shoe manufacturer, as his summer home. One had to be among the elite to get an invite to Mr. Maynard's mansion in the early 1900's.
IT LATER BECAME known as the Goddard Mansion when J.P. Goddard purchased the home in 1944. Mr. Goddard was the owner of the Goddard Bakery here in Claremont, bakers of Sunbeam bread.
TODAY, you don't have to be a member of the elite to enjoy a stay at the Goddard Mansion. It is now a bed & breakfast (since 1986) with seven unique and affordable guest rooms. Some of the rooms have panoramic views of the mountains in New Hampshire and Vermont. Outside, guests can enjoy the screened-in porch and veranda that wraps around the mansion as well as the tea-house, seven acres of land, and numerous fruit trees (from apples to peaches to plums). Inside, enjoy a book from the fumed oak paneled library and its leaded-glass enclosed book shelves. Relax in one of the many window seats in the foyer, parlor, library, and sitting room.
START YOUR DAY with our expanded continental breakfast in the mahogany paneled dining room with a beautiful view of Mount Ascutney and fresh jams and jellies made from the fruit grown on the property such as raspberry jam, grape jelly, apple jelly, and apple butter. We serve New England coffee and a selection of teas that can be enjoyed at any time during your stay. Spend your day exploring New Hampshire and Vermont and the many cultural and recreational activities in the area. We also offer free wireless internet in all of the common areas as well as five of the seven rooms and a computer with wired internet access for guests to use in the library.
EACH OF THE SEVEN GUEST ROOMS is individually decorated. From the Swan room to the Colonial room, each room has its own character. Several of the bathrooms feature original, antique claw-foot soaking tubs to soak away your cares, and large antique pedestal sinks. Many guests have described the place as "comfortable elegance." All of our guest rooms are on the second floor and none of them share a wall with another room so each is very quiet.
You'll be swept away to a bygone era with use of the butler's pantry to enjoy a cup of afternoon tea or use of the library to curl up, relax, and enjoy a good book in one of the window seats. Enjoy a glass of wine out on the veranda with a view of a magnificant sunset over Ascutney Mountain in Vermont. Or sit inside the tea-house and do some bird watching.
