History of the House
The Thomas House Bed & Breakfast was designed in 1865 by R.R. Galloway. He also built the house next door and gave the land to the First Baptist Church across the street. He later built an Opera House downtown where the Brannock and Hiatt Furniture Store is today.
The railroad first came to Mount Airy May 28, 1888. On June 19 of that same year they had a big celebration... and what a celebration it was.
A huge crowd met at the train station down on Depot Street when engineer Tom Muse and conductor Murphy brought the puffing train at seven thirty the night before. Aboard was Governor Scales. The governor and his train was met and introduced to the crowd by Judge Jesse Franklin Graves. The ladies sang the Old North Star, accompanied by the Mount Airy Coronet Band.
Where did they all sleep that night? Govenor Scales stayed in the home of an old friend R.R. Galloway who had just built his fine two-story frame house on North Main Street next to the parking lot of the First Baptist Church.
