Southport is a city in Brunswick County, North Carolina, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and home to many wonderful B&Bs. If you choose to stay at a Southport B&B or inn during the holiday season, you can participate in the Southport Historical Society-sponsored annual Christmas tour of homes on the second Saturday of each December. Southport, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, has been observing Independence Day since 1795 and annually hosts the official North Carolina 4th of July celebration. While staying at a Southport bed and breakfast, you can take the ferry over to Bald Head Island, where you will find pristine beaches, loggerhead sea turtles, and the Old Baldy Lighthouse. Nearby Southport, Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson, North Carolina Historic Sites, preserve the original settlement and port on the Cape Fear River. Excavated ruins and a museum show views of colonial life. After all that touring you will doubtless be hungry. The Cape Fear is a local, family-owned restaurant, offering excellent Southern-style cooking. Thai Peppers, located in historic downtown Southport, offers a full Thai menu including soups, salads, seafood, noodles, specialty curry and stir fry dishes.
