Salisbury is a very old town (incorporated in 1753) and is a mecca for history, geneology, antiques and train buffs. A step on to Main Street transports you back in time 100 years. Maps to the 30-square-block area, consisting of historic Downtown Salisbury and West Square, are available. The tree-lined streets showcase a collection of 19th and early 20th century homes. The Salisbury Station (built in 1907) and O.O. Rufty's General Store, reflect the period when the Rowan Oak was built. A National Cemetary is located in Salisbury where a Confederate prison once stood. 10,000 Union troops are buried there and many impressive memorials have been erected by states commemorating their honored dead. Even the Josephus Hall house built in 1820's and owned by Dr. Hall, who was the Surgeon General in the Confederate prison, still survives and is open to the public. Another major attraction in the area is the North Carolina Transportation Museum. In days gone by, it was the hub of the Southern Railways repair shop that serviced the mighty steam engines which criss-crossed the country. The roundhouse has been restored and many engines and famous private railroad cars are on display that depict elegant travel in the early 1900's. The Rowan museum is located in Salisbury in a 1819 Federal townhouse. Here you will find period rooms, antique furnishings and artifacts dating back to the early 1800's. Just 14 miles west of Salisbury, the Lazy 5 Ranch features a unique drive through an animal park with more than 450 exotic animals from around the world. The richest gold mining area east of the Mississippi was located at Gold Hill and today, the Historic Gold Hill Park and museum bring the era to life.
Centrally located between High Point, Kannapolis and Hickory, the finest furniture shopping in the world is just 30 minutes away. A 25 minute trip down the expressway takes you to Lowe's Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR, INDY races and other events.
