Introduction
Rowan Oak House takes its name from Celt and Scottish legends that
tell of the magical Rowan tree symbolizing beauty, hospitality,
privacy, peace and sanctuary. We offer these gifts to our guests.
Known for years as the Milton Slater Brown house, the residence was
lovingly designed and built by Milton Slater Brown in 1901 for his bride Fannie.
While honeymooning in Europe during the first year of marriage, Fannie
selected wallpaper for their new dining room
in Salisbury. Her selection, featuring a hunting scene, still hangs
in Rowan Oak's expansive dining room today, in
addition to a portrait of Queen Louise of Prussia.
Approaching the high Victorian home, hugged by a large, wraparound
porch, there is a feeling of warmth emanating from the freshly
painted blue dwelling. Historic preservation is an important part of
Salisbury, a fact that becomes quite evident as you approach the
bed and breakfast. Rowan Oak House is proud to listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Located in the West Square historic district just three blocks from the turn-of-the-century business area, the Rowan Oak House features a wraparound porch, a magnificent carved oak door, seven
columned fireplaces with intricate woodcarving, and stained
and leaded glass throughout. Remarkably, the original electric
and gas light fixtures remain.
The stairwell in the entry area of Rowan Oak is magnificent. Enhanced
with a handsome backdrop of quartersawn oak wainscoting, an elaborate
brass Newell post gas/electric light perches at the base of the stairs.
An angled fireplace stands across from the staircase. Seven fireplaces,
each framed with a different mantle and tiles, rest throughout the house.
Each of the four oversized bedrooms is lavishly furnished with antiques, sitting area, desk, phones, down comforters & reading lights. All have large, luxurious private baths. Upstairs parlor has cable TV and VHS, books, magazines and board games.
Rowan Oak House presents a glimpse into an era that will never exist
again. Each time you visit, it is an ongoing adventure. It is a getaway to
remember! The inn has developed a reputation for running a haven for the romantic, while still catering to the needs of the traveling business professional. The warm hospitality offers a place of sanctuary for tension-filled travelers.
"We invite you to relax on our wrap-around porch with its swing and rockers.
Or - stroll our garden walks leading to five fountains. Come see us
and "set a spell." You’ll be glad you did."
