Yesterday is remembered...
Built in 1889 on a hill overlooking the French Broad River, the grand Victorian mansion known as Richmond Hill was the private residence of ambassador and congressman Richmond Pearson. The Queen Anne-style mansion stood elegantly on a beautiful, self-supporting estate with gardens, vineyards, orchards, pasturelands, an icehouse and a dairy, and acres of rolling grounds. The mansion was notable for its innovations and luxury, with running water, ten master fireplaces, a communications system, and an elevator for transporting baggage. Richmond Hill was a center of social and political activity with Richmond's wife, Gabrielle, making a spirited and gracious hostess. The mansion became a fine showcase for Pearsons' world traveling, at one time housing historical documents, rare books, art, and signed photographs of kings and queens.
Today, the Mansion is restored beyond its former glory, and it is the crown jewel of one of the South's premier inns.
