Gardens
Our six-acre Victorian landscape features manicured gardens and natural areas, monuments, and several water features. The formal Parterre Garden at the Garden Pavilion is fashioned after the great parterres of the Victorian age—simple, geometrically landscaped gardens with paths between the beds. The formality of the winter garden created by a manicured hedge is lost in the summer months with beds of towering perennials showing off their cool, pastel colors.
The Parterre Garden at Garden Pavillion
Beginning just off the porch of the Mansion and cascading down the natural slope of the grounds into a series of small pools, the mountain brook flows to a nine-foot waterfall in the Parterre Garden. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Parterre Garden from the elevated terrace that sits above the waterfall. On the other side of the terrace, watch Japanese koi swim amongst water plants in a pool. Sitting near the waterfall and listening to the sound of rushing water, it's hard to imagine a more tranquil setting.
Built to regulation standards, the croquet lawn is smaller than a tournament court, but every bit as fun. Guests in a competitive mood may reserve the court free of charge.
The Sidney Lanier Garden centers around a monument honoring the noted poet and musician who camped on Richmond Hill in 1881 in an attempt to regain his failing health. Two benches in the garden offer a perfect spot for a moment of reflection.
For the more adventuresome, explore 40 acres of woodlands at the Inn on the Forest Loop, our 3/4-mile walking trail. You will discover rolling hills with towering trees and many native plants.
