Gateway to Ocracoke Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks
Nature's Last Outpost on the Atlantic...

An island where nature still reigns...where good food and conversation blend into the seaside lifestyle...

A thin broken strand of island curves out into the Atlantic Ocean and then back again in a sheltering embrace of North Carolina's mainland coast and its offshore sounds. These are the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For thousands of years these barrier islands have survived the onslaught of wind and sea. Today their long stretches of beach, sand dunes, marshes and woodlands are set aside as Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

It can be a lonely place; you may walk along the beach unseen except by shore birds searching for a meal. It can be a place of discovery; you may visit the 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse, one of many monuments to man's encounter with the sea.

It can be a wild place; you may be buffeted by an approaching gale or surprised by the honking of large flocks of migrating geese.

And it can be an exciting place, where you may explore may opportunities for recreation; surf fishing, sun bathing, swimming, surfing, beach combing, canoeing, sailing, snorkeling.

Part land, part sea, the outer Banks offers reward from each.

Ocracoke Island is the most remote of the Outer Banks and Ocracoke Village is the only settlement on Ocracoke Island but there is a lot to do if you like...
  • 16 miles of unspoiled, uncrowded beach
  • Deep sea and surf fishing
  • Feeding wild ponies
  • Listening to a Park Ranger's fireside talk
  • Sipping a cool drink while contemplating life
  • Maybe just resting your spirit a little

Pelican Lodge offers its guests bicycles at no charge on a first come basis. The island has 15 miles of beautiful undeveloped beach, rated as one of the most unspoiled anywhere. Bring your 4-wheel drive vehicle and you can drive on parts of it. There are interesting and historical sights to visit, theOcracoke Lighthouse, the British Cemetery, Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum, Howard Street and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to name a few. There is a nature trail and wild ponies to view. There is surf fishing and charter boat fishing as well as a sailboat ride on Silver Lake. There are shops to discover and many restaurants. The Pub is open until 2 am and has entertainment on the weekends. Call us and we'll send you a brochure, which includes a map of our location on the Outer Banks.
