Introduction
Intimate and Romantic - The 1900 Inn on Montford invites you to be our guest and discover bed and breakfast comfort and hospitality with a warmth and graciousness that is reminiscent of Biltmore's Gilded Age.
The Inn is located in the very heart of the Montford Historic District. It exemplifies the Arts and Crafts style made popular in Asheville by noted society architect, Richard Sharp Smith, supervising Architect to Biltmore House. Illustrated in his publication of 1901, My Sketchbook, the house is considered to be one of his finest residential commissions. Today it is elegantly furnished with English and American antiques dating from 1730 to 1910.
The 1900 Inn on Montford is the only pet-friendly AAA Four Diamond bed and breakfast in the Southeast!

Griffin Cottage, our new carriage house to the rear of the main Inn, offers Pet Friendly accommodation in its three secluded suites! The William Morris and Rossetti are on the ground floor and have private, enclosed back gardens, while the Cloisters is the entire second floor of the carriage house. There are four second floor guest rooms and one third floor suite, Zelda's Retreat, in the Main Inn.
We serve a delicious three-course breakfast with a fruit course, savory egg dish and dessert at 9 am preceded by the arrival of coffee or tea to your door at 8 am in the main inn. Guests in Griffin Cottage have breakfast delivered to their door at 9:30 am.
We have a social hour each evening from 6 to 7 pm. You'll have the opportunity to chat with other guests and we'll give you our favorite dining recommendations. We feature live music on Thursday and Saturday nights during social hour with local musicians playing a mixture of blue grass and "mountain music".
Breakfast consists of three courses - a fruit course, such as raspberry, banana yogurt parfait; a savory egg dish, such as shirred eggs; followed by a dessert course, such as caramel pecan rolls. Breakfasts change daily. We are able to cater to special dietary requirements. Let us know of any dietary "restrictions" when making your reservation or during check-in. The Dining Room showcases our collection of silver napkin rings, decanters and glassware. The light fixtures are reputedly "left overs" from Biltmore Estate and the Spode figurine, English (circa 1780) was featured on Antiques Roadshow in 1996 (and still being rerun on PBS!).
Meet Your Innkeepers
Lynn and Ron Carlson purchased the inn on April 1st of 1997. We opened the inn on May 1st of 1997 with the previous owner's furniture. We brought our furniture into the inn in June of 1997, opening the inn again on Friday, the 13th of June. In spite of these auspicious dates, we are now celebrating 11 years at the inn as owners/innkeepers. When we purchased the inn it had four guest rooms on the second floor. In the last half of 2000, we created Zelda's Retreat, our 1000 sq ft third floor suite, and reclaimed the basement "Grotto Suite" for owner's quarters.
The carriage house, Griffin Cottage, to the rear of the property was built in 2004, opening up the Spring of 2005. Designed by Robert Griffin of RS Griffin Architects, PA, the carriage house is an "informal" version of the main inn. It combines many of the architectural details of the main house, which was designed by Richard Sharp Smith, Supervising Architect for the Biltmore House, together with numerous luxury features to make your stay an unforgettable memory!
Starting life in Minnesota, we moved to Bloomfield, CT in 1969. From there we ventured to England in early 1974, living in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. In the Summer of 1985 we repatriated to the Main Line of Philadelphia, living in Rosemont, PA. Lynn is past President of NCBBI, the North Carolina Bed and Breakfast & Inns Association, having served three years as President and seven years on the Board. She has just finished a three year term on the board of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.
