Downtown Mount Airy

Mt. Airy and its downtown area is one of the best you will find in the state of North Carolina. We are friendly, homey and have a lot to offer those who come to visit. Our Visitor's Center is located right in the heart of Downtown, along with the Andy Griffith Museum at the Surry Arts Council Building. So for those of you who are died in the wool Mayberry fans, this is the place to be.

Our business district boasts many fine shops and eateries. We have one of the best Museums of History right downtown Mt. Airy. If you want to experience a little bit of Mayberry, then you have to go to Snappy Lunch and have a Pork Chop Sandwich all the way. Right next door to Snappy's is Floyd's Barber Shop, go in and see Russell, even if you don't need a haircut he will be glad to take your picture for his wall of fame and he'll even give you one as a souvenir. As you take a stroll on down Main Street, you'll pass one of Mt. Airy's landmarks, the clock that hangs on the pole on the corner of Moore and Main. Further down Main Street is Wally's Service station, the home of Squad Car Tours, your chance to take a full tour of Mayberry in one of the 1960's squad cars with a wonderful tour guide to tell you all about the different venues.

Not far out of town are a number of things you won't want to miss such as the world's largest open face granite quarry, Old Rockford, Pilot Mountain State Park, Horn Creek Living Farm and of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the fall come for our fall colors and Mayberry Days and Autumn Leaves Festival. In December be here for our tour of homes, as provided by the Mount Airy Historical Association. I guarantee you can fill one day to a week, doing all the things in and around Mt. Airy.

Wineries:

New to our area are all the wonderful wineries. Within less than an hours drive are over 20 wineries for your tasting and viewing enjoyment. Many of the wineries now have restaurants also. We can design a self-drive tour for you according to your wine likings. We also have limo wine tours available with advance notice.

The following wineries are some of our recommendations:

  • Old North State Winery: Just down the street from us, and home to not only a wonderful winery, but also a brewery and restaurant. Located in the renovated 1890's mercantile building in historic downtown Mount Airy. Old North State Winery started as a cooperative in 2002 and has since evolved to a winery owned by two families with one vision. The vineyards were established on farms that have been in their families for generations. Enjoy the culmination of their dreams, and devotion to their farmland, and passion for their wines produced at Old North State Winery. Open daily for wine tastings, check them out at www.oldnorthstatewinery.com

  • Round Peak Winery: Home to some unique award winning wines, Round Peak is a beautiful mountain side vineyard located just 8 miles from us. www.roundpeak.com

  • Shelton Vineyards: Founded in 1999, Shelton Vineyards is the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina. The winery features a spacious visitor center with a tasting bar and gift shop. Also the Harvest Grill restaurant is fine dining with a gorgeous view of the vineyard. www.sheltonvineyards.com

  • Black Wolf Vineyard and Winery: Home to one of the first area winery restaurants, Black Wolf Vineyards is the oldest vineyard in Surry County. The tasting room and restaurant are set atop the highest point on the vineyard grounds, with sweeping panoramas of the surrounding Piedmont foothills and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds, and visit a spring-fed well house and "secret garden," where you can look for a meteorite set into the stone wall that surrounds the garden. www.blackwolfvineyards.com

  • RagApple Lassie Vineyards: Family owned and operated, RagApple Lassie Vineyards were one of the first new vineyards planted to take the place of the tobacco that is so widely grown in Surry County. The first winery in Boonville, Frank and Lenna have excelled in wine producing and with great pride were finalists in the Best New Winery in the USA. They have a great story about the name of the winery and be sure to ask about Lenna's necklace too. Just about 30 minutes from us, this winery is one you have to check out. www.ragapplelassie.com

There are lots more wineries and vineyards to visit - please check out the list at www.yadkinvalleywinetrail.com
