Kerr Lake
Kerr Lake is one of the largest lakes on the Piedmont. The man-made lake was created in 1953 when the Roanoke River was dammed to assist in flood control and to provide hydroelectric power. Another result was the creation of one of the largest, most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state. Kerr Lake State Recreation Area consists of nine separate rec areas spread out over 3,000 acres of land. Facilities at the rec areas include developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and boat ramps. The lake sees heavy recreational use, with boating and bass fishing being the most popular activities. The lake is large enough that it rarely seems crowded.
Kerr Lake is one of the most highly regarded lakes for largemouth and striped bass fishing in North Carolina. Tournaments are held here regularly during the spring and summer months. Although most fishing is done from boats, most of the rec areas and campgrounds have shorelines with at least some portions suitable for casting.
