History of the Boxley
The Boxley Bed & Breakfast is a Greek/Federal style home that is the result
of three stages of construction. The one story structure with a splayed gable
roof and large interior chimney pre-dates the establishment of Madison (circa
1785) and contends with The Boxwood as the town's oldest extant structure.
The earlier portion of the two story house was erected in 1825 by William
Hegwood who owned it for less than five years and in the early 1830's deeded
it to Pleasant Black whose family occupied it throughout most of the 19th
century.
In the early 1830's a two story Greek Revival hip-roofed ell with another
two story pediment porch supported by monumental Ionic columns (built with
rounded brick made at a plantation just outside Madison) was added to the
west end of the earlier two story block so that the house now faces Hunter
Street. This addition doubled the size of the existing structure. In 1930,
the third stage of construction added a sun-porch, bathroom and an additional
hall and staircase to connect to the main house.
