Introduction
Before the interstates there were highways. Before the highways there were country roads. And before them all, there was the Black Mountain Inn.
Travelers have visited the Inn since the 1830's when it opened as a stage coach stop. Later, many came for healing, for several years at the turn of the century, the Inn was home to the Franklin Humanitarian Home, one of many TB sanatoriums in the mountains at the turn of the century. In the 1940's, at the peak of activity at Black Mountain College (one mile up the road), the Inn was summer home to socialite Mary Alshire, who opened the house to artists and intellectuals for summer respites. John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemmingway, Helen Keller and Joan Sutherland were among her guests. The third floor was remodeled as a painter's studio where Norman Rockwell well among other painters gathered to develop and practice their craft.
June Bergeron and Claudette
You'll know instantly why this special place has endured. Then as today, the Inn has appealed to the special spirit of poets and painters. Built long before electricity, the Inn was designed to provide comfort...Sixty-six windows provide our guests with mountain breezes and the fragrance of North America's last remaining rain forest. Seven guest rooms offer views of the treetops and gardens below. Each guest room has a private bath with tub and shower. Breakfast is included and one of the many sensual pleasures at the Black Mountain Inn. Every item served is made from scratch with an emphasis on local fresh foods from the farms of Western North Carolina. Always you can count on homemade granola, homemade breads, fresh fruits, coffee and teas, as well as a wonderful baked entree daily.
After a sumptuous breakfast at the morning table, the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains and their neighbors are yours to discover - the Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore Estate, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are all convenient to the Inn. Pets are welcome here too, and there are plenty of pet-friendly hiking trails nearby. Or, spend a quiet day on the grounds taking in the gardens. Arrange for an on-site massage or reflexology treatment. Read a treasured book or take a nap on a cozy bed. You won't find telephones, televisions, VCR or DVD players in the rooms at the Black Mountain Inn, but if you love history, nature, the arts or an idea...you will enjoy the Black Mountain Inn.
