As the Trace continues past Jackson, Mississippi, you begin to enter an
area of Southern magnolias and Spanish moss -- truly the deep South!
Nearby Vicksburg has its Civil War battlefield, as well as a couple of
casinos and some excellent restaurants.
Back on the Trace, Mt.
Locust, one of the early inns, or "stands", has been restored, has
interpretive programs, and is well worth a stop. One "Old Trace" walk
features a section of Trace that has even sunken from its heavy use so
many years ago.
From Port Gibson to Natchez are found numerous antebellum homes, some
even dating back to the time this area was a Spanish colony. Dating
even earlier are Indian mounds and the site of the Grand Village of
the Natchez Indians. Natchez has perhaps a dozen homes open for
visitors year-round, has buggy rides, and gardens there are lovely
most of the year.
