The Trace passes through the northwest corner of Alabama, near the
towns of Florence and Muscle Shoals and Pickwick Lake, crossing the
Tennessee River. Nearby is Shiloh National Battlefield, scene of one of
the most important battles of the Civil War, and one of the best
preserved.
The terrain flattens out and, as the trees and shrubs take on a more
southern flavor: sweet bay magnolia, pines, oakleaf hydrangeas. The
headquarters of the Natchez Trace, with a nice visitors' center, is at
Tupelo, Mississippi -- also known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley!
One interpretive stop features Indian mounds. Further into Mississippi
we pass French Camp and Kosciusko, towns that owe their beginnings to
the presence of the Trace. There is a visitors's center there, and a
crafts center near Jackson, as well.
