Introduction

Charley Montana Bed & Breakfast - Glendive, Montana In 1907, rancher Charles Krug and his family moved into their new home. Natural light flooded the huge windows and made rainbows through the leaded glass. Quarter-sawn oak gleamed with honey colors. Carvings on the stairway and fireplaces were smooth to the touch. Massive doors hung in the high-ceilinged rooms.

It's still pretty much the way it was. Jim and Katherine Lee welcome the visitor to the spacious accommodations. Visitors share a reading hall, plump-cushioned Victorian conversation nook, parlor, sitting rooms, and formal dining room. Five comfortably decorated guest rooms have private baths, air conditioning, televisions, and queen-size beds.

Breakfasts are hot and hearty, like Annie Krug would have cooked a hundred years ago.

The Rancher Hall downstairs is furnished with antique hickory armchairs and twig tables. At the end of the hall, an antique bank vault door protects the contents of Charles Krug's old wine cellar. The River Room includes comfortable furniture, television, a hand-made parquet poker table, and a collection of 78 RPM records from the early 1900s to the 1940s. The third floor includes four rooms for Lee family and friends, furnished with Krug family furniture, iron beds, and books galore.

What Travel Folks Write About Charley Montana Bed & Breakfast

In 2006, Frommer's described Charley Montana B&B:
"Frommer's Review, 2006 - An impeccable restoration of a majestic neoclassical mansion, Charley Montana is a top-flight B&B in what was once the palatial, 26-room abode of rancher Charles Krug. Ninety years after breaking ground in 1906, the Krug family sold the house and many of its original furnishings; innkeepers Jim and Katherine Lee are only the second owners. Jim has done wonders restoring the house to its original condition, paying particularly close attention to the woodwork inside and out. The five guest rooms include the Charles Room, the old master bedroom with the leather-bound encyclopedia from the Krug family library, as well as the Annie Suite, named for Krug's wife, with an impressive wardrobe and separate sitting area with heirloom armchairs. Transplants from the Twin Cities, the Lees are warm and gracious hosts with keen senses of humor and local history. Their 8,000-square-foot inn is located on the outskirts of downtown Glendive, cater-cornered to an old silo and a stone's throw from the old Bell Street Bridge across the Yellowstone River, now reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists."

Cross Country or Bust, MSNBC.com
"The clear choice is the Charley Montana B&B, right by the town's center and 100 feet or so from the Yellowstone River, which runs right through Glendive. The B&B is run by Katherine and Jim Lee, two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Staying with them is like staying with your family -- without any of the strife. The rooms of the 8,000 square foot house are large and opulent in a High West sort of way."

Lonely Planet, Rocky Mountains, 3d ed.
"The innkeepers bought this 100-year-old house from the children of its original owner and converted it to a B&B, retaining much of the original flavor -- and furnishings. The owners are historians of the area, and guests are welcome to browse the collections of Western art and books."
