Introduction

Present Day R&R at a Time-Honored B&B is found at this 1896 Queen Anne beauty, offering Mississippi River views, seasonal gardens and cozy featherbeds. Located in Historic Downtown Hannibal, Mark Twain's hometown, on the street once known as Millionaire's Row because of its beautiful homes and fine architecture, the Garden House Bed & Breakfast beckons guests to lodge in a beautifully restored home. Built by Albert Wells Pettibone, Jr., son of the founder of the Hannibal Saw Mill and Sash Companies, the family's love for natural woods is still evident throughout the rooms today. Oak, mahogany and old grove pine adorn the parlors, fireplaces, foyers and four guest bedrooms. Innkeepers Chris and Rick greet each guest, with European featherbeds, personalized breakfasts served in the signature garden dining room (a visitor attraction in itself), midday cookies on the charming porch overlooking the seasonal gardens, cotton robes, cable TV, wireless internet access and more. ...nothing so liberalizes a man and expands the kindly instincts that nature
put in him as travel and contact with many kinds of people - Mark Twain

History of the Garden House

The Garden House was built in 1896 by Albert Wells Pettibone, Jr., son of the founder of the family lumber businesses: the Hannibal Saw Mill Company and the Hannibal Sash and Company. The family's love for natural woods is still evident throughout each of the House's rooms.

Women's Parlor The Garden House Today

Guests have the rule of the house in the Garden House's two parlors (historically, a men's and a women's), two foyers (downstairs and upstairs) and formal dining room. Three guestrooms have queen beds and the South Room has a king bed. The South Room can also be paired with the West Room and its adjoining bath to accommodate families. The South and East Room, featuring unique canopy beds, overlook the Mighty Mississippi River. The North Room, with its adjoining bath, is the most secluded and is decorated in violet hues.

When I find a well-drawn character in fiction or biography I generally take a warm personal interest in him,
for the reason that I have known him before--met him on the river - Mark Twain
