Introduction
The Red Gables Inn, built in 1865, is an intimate Bed and Breakfast Inn capturing the romantic spirit of the Victorian era. The Inn is a charming mixture of Italianate and Greek Revival, built in 1865 by Helen and Marshall Bessey, a wealthy wheat merchant from Wisconsin. Today the Victorian has been lovingly and thoughtfully restored to create an inviting ambiance of past splendor and elegance. Even the wall covering and trim have been authentically duplicated as exquisite examples of the period.
Our Mississippi River Victorian is just a short stroll to the shoreline of beautiful Lake Pepin and our 2 1/2 mile River Walk. You will enjoy exploring the picturesque town of Lake City, the birthplace of water skiing, and home of the largest small boat marina on the Mississippi.
Each of the four guest rooms is a step back in time, individually decorated and appointed with period antiques. Queen and king reproduction Victorian-style beds adorn rooms equipped with full baths that feature showers or showers over claw footed soaking tubs. Ceiling fans capture cool Lake Pepin breezes, with air conditioning available for warmer evenings.
The Red Gables Inn invites you to share the comfort of our parlor, a serene setting for conversation, reading, enjoying games, or playing the piano. Prior to dining, join us for twilight wine and hors d'oeuvres on the porch or in the parlor to share camaraderie and make new friends. Before retiring enjoy a taste of sherry from your own private stock. Awaken to a savory breakfast buffet of juices, seasonal fruits, home baked breads and pastries, special egg dishes, jams, jellies, coffee and tea served for your pleasure at 9:00 a.m. in the fireside dining room.
The Red Gables Inn Bed and Breakfast is a perfect gathering place for family reunions, small bridle or baby showers, scrapbooking parties, quilting bees, college roommate sleepovers, or a romantic get-away for two.
Lake City is appropriately located along the Great River Road, one of Minnesota's Scenic Byways. The beauty of the landscape invites you to relax at one of our shoreline parks, take a stroll on the River Walk and explore our quaint downtown shops. Known as the "Birthplace of Waterskiing," Lake City offers opportunities to enjoy this sport, as well as motor boating, canoeing, sailing, fishing, golfing and hiking. Our full service marina is the largest small craft marina on the Mississippi River. In fall and winter, our downhill and cross-country ski trails and miles of snowmobile trails offer ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Birding for Eagles and Swans in winter, and for migrating songbirds in spring has become a popular year round opportunity in our Migratory Flyway.
We are located a short walk to Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River, and a short drive to Red Wing and Wabasha, Minnesota. Just 68 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul, 38 miles from Rochester, Minnesota, 45 miles from Winona, 100 miles from La Crosse, Wisconsin, and 25 miles from Pepin and Stockholm, Wisconsin.
