World's Largest Pelican
|

Floralane Gardens
|
- Pelican Rapids
- Home of the "world's largest pelican" (15 1/2 feet tall) which has
kept watch over the adjacent Mill Pond Dam for 40 years. (Also Ugly
Truck Contest)
- Perham
- Plays host to the international turtle races (if you don't have
one the Chamber will gladly loan you one!) One fine summer day, 200 young
turtle wranglers turned out. Also home to the Verona Larson Doll Museum.
- Floralane Gardens
- Off Highway 78 on Co. Rd 14. The Gardens stand out as a sea of color
against a blue sky backdrop where more than 3 acres have been transformed
into a floral paradise.
- New York Mills
- Home of the Regional Cultural Center. The town has become known
as a creative mecco to local and regional artists (as well as national)
who gather to study and display their varied talents. Gallery exhibits
rotate every 7 weeks. Musical and Literary events are held each
month. Also home to LUND Boats. The manufacturer hosts tours every
Tuesday and Thursday. Nationally known Think Off is held 3rd weekend
in June.
- The Finn Creek Open Air Museum
- The museum provides a peek into the past at the original farmstead of
Finnish settlers. Visitors can tour the premises which include a "savu"
or smoke sauna.
- Battle Lake
- Numerous antique and craft shops and a delightful sandwich shop
called the Coffee Cottage.
- Vining
- Visitors may be startled to spy a giant metal foot resting
alongside the road. The foot completed in 1991 from scrap metal by
Vining sculptor Ken Nyberg, has been joined by a square knot, an Indian
brave astride a horse, a cowboy waving to passers-by and a giant cup
of coffee suspended in mid-air while the contents spill to the ground.
- Inspiration Peak
- The highest peak in Minnesota (1750 ft. above sea level) lies in
Otter Tail County. The hike is challenging, but worth the view which
streches for miles in every direction.
- Fergus Falls
- The County Historical Society Museum is impressive. (It's
individual "windows" are quite comparable to those in the Smithsonian
on the same topic. A VERY worthwhile visit.)
- Phelps Mill Park
- One of the most beautiful parks in Minnesota. Completed in 1889,
the mill was once the site of a bustling milling operation on the
banks of the Otter Tail River. The mill is open to the public for
self-guided tours.
