  • Tall, wooded bluffs tower above this picturesque corner of the state. Gently rolling countryside dips into ravines and valleys, where creeks meander through emerald pastures. Rivertowns and bluff country villages charm guests with their 19th century architecture, antique shops and numerous bed & breakfast and historic inns. Trout streams, canoe rivers and bike trails wind their way past forested hillsides. Autumn brings beautiful fall colors and roadside apple stands.

Red Wing is the eastern trail access for the scenic Cannon Valley Bike Trail, which follows a winding river to Cannon Falls. Halfway along the trail is the tiny village of w, with tube and canoe rentals for a lazy float down the Cannon River. There are several state parks with trails for biking, rollerblading and cross-country skiing. This is a wonderful way to view spring wildflowers, fall colors and thousands of birds.

Tucked amid rolling farmland and wooded hills, Rochester’s Mayo Clinic has a worldwide reputation as a medical research and treatment center. Frequently named as one of the most livable cities in the U.S., Rochester has a symphony orchestra, art center, theaters and performances by top-name entertainers at the Mayo Civic Center. Rochester is a shopping hub for this part of the state and has a number of antique shops.
