Minneapolis, Saint Paul and their surrounding communities are vibrant cities offering an
array of exciting theater and touring Broadway shows; intriguing science, children’s, art
and history museums; and professional sports such as the Twins, Vikings and
Timberwolves. Nightlife resounds with jazz, blues, rock clubs and dance performances.
The scenery of this attractive metropolis includes contemporary skylines, historic
architecture, greenways of parks and lakes and the Mississippi, Minnesota and St. Croix
Rivers.
Two architectural landmarks near downtown Saint Paul are the turn-of the-century State
Capitol and the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Atop a bluff where the Mississippi and Minnesota
rivers meet, Historic Fort Snelling was built in 1825 as a frontier outpost. Costumed
characters recreate military and civilian life at the fort. East of Saint Paul is a nationally
designated scenic riverway, winding between wooded banks. Train excursions and river
cruises are a great way to explore this area.
The Mall of America in Bloomington is the country’s largest shopping and entertainment
center. It has emerged as a major travel destination, housing more than 500 shops, four
department stores, an amusement park, huge aquarium, nightclubs, comedy club, movie
theaters and other entertainment. Just southwest of the mall is Mystic Lake Casino for
those who love to gamble.
The Twin Cities area is filled with family fun. Valleyfair is the largest, action-packed
amusement park in the Upper Midwest and offers thrilling roller coasters, children’s rides,
a waterpark and other excitement. The exceptional Minnesota Zoo is home to 450 species
of animals in natural settings. It features a new marine exhibit and a new Imax theater, one
of the largest in the country. Blaine, located in the north metro area, is home to the National
Sports Center. It hosts the USA Cup soccer tournament and has the only wooden
velodrome in the U.S. for bicycle racing.
