To Minnesotans, the "North Shore" means Lake Superior, in all its majesty, its shining
waters stretching to the horizon. The North Shore is where Superior’s craggy shoreline
meets miniature mountains blanketed by pine and birch. Wilderness streams plunge over
waterfalls. Harbor towns rest here and there along the shore. The breathtaking scenery
along the shore is the backdrop to all kinds of adventures - from hiking to mountain
biking, kayaking to charter fishing, skiing to snowmobiling.
Crowning the tip of giant Lake Superior is Duluth, a contemporary city filled with history
and spirit. There are many things to do and see here, such as: the unique Aerial Lift Bridge;
the William A. Irvin, a retired ore carrier; the Marine Museum, which tells details of Great
Lakes shipping, including tragic shipwrecks; dining cruises aboard the Vista Fleet;
Omnimax theater; history and children’s museum plus a train museum; the 39-room
Glensheen mansion with a carriage house and formal gardens; and Spirit Mountain ski
area. Duluth is a great destination all four seasons.
Grand Marais is nestled along the shore of Superior, noted as a community of artists, the
town features numerous art galleries. Gift shops, cafes and harbor views encourage visitors
to linger.
Take a beautiful drive up the North Shore, which runs for about 150 miles from Duluth to
Canada. Along the way you will see some of the most spectacular scenery in Minnesota.
This drive is especially popular in fall as the leaves turn colors. Visit a state park and view
wilderness rivers and waterfalls, perfect for a picnic or long trek through the woods. Stay
in a charming inn to gain the full experience of the Superior North Shore area.
