Among the pine forests of the north is a land called the Iron Range. Its rich ethnic heritage
reflects the varied cultures of the people who came to work the mines. Along with its
interesting mining history is an abundance of outdoor recreation in the forests and lakes of
the area. In the countryside leading up to the Range, scenic rivers wind through the woods.
Those who venture off the main highway are rewarded by the natural beauty and intriguing
past of this river country.
Lake Vermilion is one of the region’s largest and most beautiful bodies of water. Boating,
waterskiing and sailing are popular on Vermilion and it’s a favorite with anglers. A
cleverly designed miniature golf course features northern Minnesota themes in a shady
setting. Take a tour of the deep, dark caverns where immigrant miners worked to extract
the world’s richest iron ore.
Other points of interest are the Classic Cars Museum and Ironworld Discovery Center in
Chrisholm, U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth and the Hinckley Fire Museum in the
old train depot in Hinckley. Enjoy downhill skiing, world-class cross-country and
mountain bike trails and over 3,000 miles of snowmobile trails that wind over the hilly,
wooded terrain of the Iron Range. All these adventures and more make this area a great
vacation destination.
