Gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which hugs roughly 100 miles of the Canadian border, this is one of the most peaceful regions of Minnesota. Visitors can pick up a paddle and head out onto silent waters, or in the winter don skis and explore miles of world-class cross-country ski trails. Listen for the howls of wolves from the safety of your MN Bed and Breakfast, and while in the wilderness keep an eye out for moose and bear. Head east and end up on the craggy northern shores of Lake Superior; one of the most beautiful areas in the state, it can be accessed via the North Shore Drive, which runs from Duluth to Canada, or by foot through more than 200 miles of the Superior Hiking Trails. Farther southwest in Gilbert, folks can explore the woods in their ATVs and trucks in the only off-highway vehicle park in the state of Minnesota. The Northeast is also rich in history. Find a Minnesota Bed and Breakfast in the town of Two Harbors, where several museums explore the relationship between the town and Lake Superior. Learn about early Swedish settlers in the town of Mora, and the early fur trade in Pine City. The Discovery Center in Chisholm reminds visitors of Minnesota's culturally diverse mining past.
