Pine forests and pristine lakes - this is the land where the Mississippi River gets its start as a
quiet, woodland stream. These north woods also harbor Minnesota’s biggest lakes - Red,
Mule Lacs, Leech and "Big Winnie." The Woods and Waters are a scenic backdrop for
fishing, golfing, biking or simply relaxing by a lake. When the snow flies, it’s a paradise
for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers.
Lake Mille Lacs is one of Minnesota’s top walleye producers, but its habitat also supports a
total of 40 fish species, including bass, northern pike, perch and muskie. Grand Casino
Mule Lacs is one of the largest in the state and includes a creative play area for kids.
The Brainerd Lakes area is in the heart of Minnesota, splashed with almost 500 lakes.
Some of the finest championship golf courses in the Midwest are found here, as well as
more easygoing courses. The new Paul Bunyan Trail is paved for biking between Brainerd
and Hackensack. Kids will enjoy the amusement parks, miniature golf and water slides.
The Woods and Waters area contains five state parks that offer a beautiful mix of pines and
hardwoods, with pretty fall color, great for hiking, biking, birding, snowmobiling and
cross-country skiing.
