Overlooking Spirit Lake near Vergas, MN, the Loghouse & Homestead Bed and Breakfast is cradled amidst 115 acres of hills, fields and maple woods in the heart of the famous Minnesota lake country. Luxury, pampering and privacy are its hallmark.
This elegant and romantic B&B is comprised of two very different structures: the 1902 Swedish Homestead, original to the property, and the innkeeper's great-great grandparent's 1889 Loghouse. The latter was moved intact from northern Minnesota and still wears its original interior whitewash. Six generations of the innkeeper's family have slept under its roof. Now you can too.
All five guest rooms have private baths, lakeside balconies and abound with amenities. Three hiking trails grace the premises. Canoes, rowboats and snowshoes (gratis) offer guests the best of Minnesota seasonal activities. It is a perfect choice for honeymoons and weddings. Pure maple syrup produced from our woods is a breakfast treat and is also available for purchase.

Breakfast is meant to be an experience. At the Loghouse, this bountiful meal occurs on the screen porch or in front of the fire in the parlor. At the Homestead, service is in-room on linen-dressed teacarts, while the Suite has its own breakfast room. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and fresh-ground coffee are "de rigueur." See our recipes for examples of main dishes paired with local sausage and fresh fruit. All breads and sweets are fresh from the oven.

Two very different structures compose this little hostelry located in picturesque Otter Tail County in the heart of Minnesota’s lakes region. The county's rolling hills and curving roads encase over 1,000 sparkling lakes (more than any other county in the US). It is a verdant land in summer, a riot of color in autumn and pristine white in winter--a lovely playground for any season. Watching the lake ice "go out" in spring can be spectacular.

The INN and its KEEPER(s)
Suzanne Tweten has been coming to this property since she was born--as did her mother before her. Her parents opened the doors of the Loghouse in June 1990 as a hobby upon their retirement from the Foreign Service. Within a few years, guest demand justified expansion to the Homestead. What had been a seasonal enterprise, quickly grew to a year-round operation and an overly demanding vocation. They needed help! And that help was waiting in the wings. In 1998 they turned the reins over to Suzanne and put themselves out to pasture. For Suzanne, living on the property fulfilled a dream she had since she was 13 years old. Recognized in the family for her great love of the land, she always pitched a tent and slept outside. In fact, she never spent a night inside the farmhouse until she became the innkeeper and started rising early to fix breakfast. The only reason she moved indoors was because she could never get any sleep. She was always listening to the owls, the fox and other wildlife. Cold weather played a bit of a role in that decision too! Now she lives and thrives in the Homestead with her calico cat Steinway and beautiful Springer "puppy" Chloe, doting on guests to ensure they have a delightful visit.
