The Homestead

The Homestead, original to the property, was built in 1902 by Swedish immigrants Gust Fredholm and his wife Kristina. Today, its lakeside entrance, all-season wicker-filled porch, central air-conditioning and three lovely bedrooms each with bath, offer guests luxury and comfort. All of the rooms are equipped with full coffee/tea service and refrigerator. Porch

The Fredholm Suite

nestled under the eaves, is furnished in authentic Gustavian Period reproductions and locally found antiques. Six skylights flood the space with light. The fireplace is visible from the double whirlpool, queen-size bed and sitting area. Linens are from France and Sweden and an array of Carl Larsson prints grace the walls. The bar sink, vanity and whirlpool surround are of bluestone marble from Sweden. The water closet is enclosed in its own private space. Sliding glass doors in the Breakfast Room give onto its lakeside balcony. Resting beneath the clerestory windows, the room's Swedish settee enjoys this view as well. This room also boasts a small electric fireplace.

John Lejins, a Canadian author, writes of the Fredholm Suite: "When the light is more subdued, the design of the Suite, the color scheme and the relative austerity of the furnishings, altogether create an almost ecclesiastical, reverential atmosphere. On winter nights, guests lying on the queen-size bed can easily imagine while gazing through the skylights that all the stars revolve just around Spirit Lake."
