Activities and Area Attractions
This little hostelry is located in picturesque Otter Tail County in the heart of Minnesota's famous lake country. More than 1,000 sparkling lakes are surrounded by rolling hills and curving roads, free of billboards and full of wildlife. It is a verdant land in summer, a riot of color in autumn and pristine white in winter - a lovely playground in any season. Watching the ice "go out" in spring can be spectacular.
What To Do
The general area offers antiquing, craft/gift shops, art galleries, museums, golfing, hiking, biking, birding and groomed cross-country ski trails. Festivals galore are to be found throughout the area. VERGAS'S own Maple Syrup Fest held the 1st Saturday in April is the westernmost area in the WORLD for commercial maple syrup production. Syrup from our OWN sugarbush is on sale at the B&B.
Events like WE Fest and New York Mills Think Off bring thousands to the area. The Phelps Mill Art Festival also attacts visitors from all over the country. Detroit Lakes Polar Days brings crowds of bundled up fans who come to watch a bunch of hardy folks who think nothing of jumping into a hole in the lake ice in freezing temps. Snowmobile and cross-country ski races attract hundreds. The International Sled Dog races are held every January in the Frazee/Vergas area.

Guests are free to roam the property. A wildlife refuge has been created on former pastureland. Now, 3,000 hand-planted trees, prairie grasses, wetland and hardwood forest attract animals and birds year round. A pair of EAGLES nest across the lake - one can watch them from the balconies. Fox, deer, muskrats, and mink, even wild turkeys are frequently seen. Grouse drum their mating call and beavers flap their tails to sound the alarm. Plutie (we had originally thought her to be a HIM and named him Plutarch) our tame grouse, frequents the cottage for her ration of apples and peanuts. Six kinds of woodpeckers and dozens of species of migrating birds visit the feeders during the year. In April, the loons return, heralding spring with their mournful cry. The bluebirds arrive in abundance, squabbling over who gets which house. Occasionally, one catches sight of a scarlet tanager or indigo bunting or equally brilliant cardinal - truly a birder's delight. Autumns are MAGNIFICENT - acres and acres of flaming woods reflect their glory in the azure water. A canoe ride around the lake at this time of year is a most memorable experience.
Partake of this Jubilance! Bring a picnic to Carl's Hilltop table for a spectacular view of the lake. BASK in the sunset on your balcony or porch with the goodies from our welcome tray. RELISH your morning beverage and paper in the rays of the morning sun. RELAX over breakfast - perhaps an entree with our own PURE maple syrup.
