Introduction

Addie's Attic Bed & Breakfast -

Houston, Minnesota
Enjoy the Changing Seasons of Bluff Country!
Houston, the entryway to Bluff Country, is one hour east of Rochester, Minnesota.

Walk through the doors of a unique historic house in the Root River Valley. Constructed in 1903 by Christ Rasmussen, a long-time Houston Dry Goods Merchant, this lovely old home has been enjoyed by many families for almost a century. After being lovingly restored, it opened as a Bed and Breakfast in 1991.

A beautiful oak stairway, with a newel post, greets visitors at the front door and leads to the guest rooms and shared bath on the second story. Addie's Attic offers air-conditioned comfort in the summer and is ideal for a cozy winter getaway. Hearty, home-cooked breakfasts are served each morning following your stay in the room of your choice. The Toy Room

While staying at Addie's Attic you are encouraged to explore Bluff Country...

Take self-guided tours of the area, including one which gives you a view of the River Valley from atop Oak Ridge, which is the setting for many scenes of renowned wildlife artist, Michael Sieve. Visit a water-powered mill, canoe the Root River or bicycle on the area's state trail.

Browse the charming antique shops nearby or pitch some horseshoes in the park (horseshoes available at Addie's Attic). We also invite you to pick yourself a handful of fresh raspberries during mid-August in Addie's own backyard!

History

The house was built during the era of the "hired girl" and a simple back staircase leads to the kitchen from her room where the woodwork is more modest than the family's quarters. A portion of the home was once the main building of the Houston Public School. The nail holes in the dining room floor attest to rows of desks once being mounted there. The cozy front parlor with its graceful curved glass window always gives you a beautiful view of the city park, be it serenely covered with snow in winter or filled with playful children in summer.

Addie's Attic is named after Addie Gydal Dybing, a Houston native, who occupied the house for over 25 years. As a hospital-trained registered nurse, she interrupted her career to raise her family and later returned to nursing until her retirement. She was a strong, independent individualist. Friends remember her for her conservative style of dress (hair drawn neatly into a bun) and meticulous housekeeping (the clean scent of Ivory soap throughout the house). The "attic" portion of the name is intended to conjure up memories of things past, found in Grandma's attic. Each room of the house has been named after something found in a corner of "Addie's Attic".
