Henry J. Dornbos immigrated from the Netherlands in 1882. He built this home for his wife and two children and the property remained in the Dornbos family for 56 years. In 1889, Mr. Dornbos and his brother establish a prominent smoked and salted fish business in Grand Haven. The firm H. J. Dornbos and Bro. was reputed to be the largest wholesale fish dealer of white fish in the United States eventually serving 800 retail outlets across the country. Mr. Dornbos was active in the community and in 1910 helped establish the Peoples Savings Bank which continues to serve the community as the National Bank of Detroit. The home remained a private residence until the spring of 1987 when it opened as a Bed and Breakfast.
