Traverse City is located in the Northern corner of Michigan. Surrounded by fresh green forests and shiny blue waters, Traverse City is all about the outdoors. Hike on a long lonely sand beach or on a quiet trail in the woods. Pedal an all-terrain bike along a scenic piney trail. Climb a windswept dune and gaze out over the endless blue of Lake Michigan. In winter, grab cross-country skiis or snowshoes and move silently through a white wilderness, or strap on downhill skiis and slide down well-groomed alpine runs. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers magnificent views over sweeping vistas of Lake Michigan from atop high dunes, miles of perfect freshwater beaches, forested wilderness islands, hiking trails and a series of preserved historic farmsteads. The glistening waters of Lake Michigan make a stunning backdrop for the dunes and forests, while abundant wildlife and a diverse ecosystem thrill the nature lover. Surrounded by navigable water, Traverse City is the ideal starting point for any boating adventure. Nestled at the base of the twin Grand Traverse Bays, the city hosts several marinas and boat rental businesses. Take your choice from cabin cruisers, catamarans, personal watercraft, sailing surfboards, ski boats, pontoon boats or one of the picturesque tall ships. Visit some of our many art galleries. Take in a museum. Play mini-golf or drive a go-kart on a race track. Ride a restored antique carousel inside a shopping mall. Stroll though our vibrant downtown shopping district. Other options include casinos, golf, wineries, beaches, outdoor activities, arts and more! Did we mention festivals? The National Cherry Festival is the granddaddy of Traverse City's celebrations. It begins the first Saturday of July and runs for 8 days. The Traverse City Film Festival was held for the first time in 2005 and has returned bigger and better each year. The week-long event is held in late July and runs through early August. Horse Shows by the Bay Equestrian Festival features more than 1200 world-class riders & horses from throughout the country competing for three weeks in the Olympic Disciplines of Show Jumping & Dressage. Other festivals include the Kalkaska Winterfest in January, the Mesick Mushroom Festival in May, the National Trout Festival in April, the Elk Rapids Harbor Days, Empire Anchor Days in mid-July, the Sleeping Bear Dunegrass and Blues Festival in early August, the Peshawbestown Traditional Pow Wow in mid-August, and many more events throughout the year.
