Introduction

The Bed & Breakfast Association of Southern Michigan (SMI) is a cooperative organization of exclusive B&Bs/Inns located in the southernmost portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Together, our B&B/Inn group offers settings from exciting urban hideaways, to quiet country retreats, to luxurious lakeshore getaways. Our diverse group of innkeepers specialize in a multitude of special events including romantic getaways, dinner packages, wine pairing, outdoor activities, tours, murder mystery dinners, massage and spa packages.

Travel to Michigan and enjoy these Bed and Breakfast/Inns. We are located near the southern boundary of our Great Lake State following the 1000 year old Sauk Trail (U.S. Highway 12) beginning at the shores of Lake Michigan in the Southwest and continuing to Lake Erie in the East in a corridor North of the Indiana/Ohio border of Southern Michigan.

Traveling across Southern Michigan

Along Lake Michigan shores you can swim, sail, fish, or lay on sandy beaches, you can enjoy local seaside cuisine, village shops, or take in breathtaking views of Lake Michigan at sunset and see wave filled harbors full of yachts and sailboats.

All along the shoreline there is a bounty of fresh luscious fruits, including grapes. Traveling in the wine country, you can drive along country roads with miles of grape vineyards and visit some of Michigan's most favorite wineries.

As you travel East lose yourself in historical locations, in antique shops and amusement parks. Drive down a dirt road near the Sauk Trail, past farms that have been in the same family for over 150 years, or discover the legends of the River Country, boasting more rivers creeks, and streams than any other county in Michigan. Canoe and navigate those same rivers once traveled by American Indians, then by trappers and later by traders. Visit the longest of Michigan's few remaining covered bridges.

Continuing along the trail, and upon entering the Irish Hills, an area settled by the Irish in the 1800's you find many lakes, parks, and some of the highest peaks in southeastern Michigan. The Irish Hills have a long tradition of friendly hospitality, wholesome entertainment, and beauty. Explore the end of the rainbow in the area so green with rolling hills and dotted with over 50 clear blue lakes. Walk through an 1800's western town with a petting zoo and street shows. See water run up hill, enjoy a drive through the botanical gardens or picnic in one of the many parks. Falls brings colors unsurpassed anywhere. Winter brings silence to the hills for cross-country skiers.

Stretching along the entire route of US-12, also known as "Antique Alley", you find many villages, art galleries, museums, golf courses, flea markets, craft shops, festivals, farm markets, and unique entertainment and dining. Be sure to include a day at the Henry Ford Museum or the new giant Great Lakes Crossing Shopping Mall in Auburn Hills, or shop at the world's foremost sports outfitter, Cabela's in Dundee.

Finally, SMI is committed to sponsoring only members who have demonstrated their ability to provide a positive experience for their guests. Although each B&B experience may be different our dedicated members have a common thread which is to provide you Great-Stays and Great-Fun. Plan your next fun filled trip by staying at one of our B&B/Inns, our innkeepers will gladly advise you where to go and what to do so that your Michigan experience will be memorable.
