Excitement in Downtown Kalamazoo
In the last decade the downtown of Kalamazoo has really caught fire. Outstanding fusion restaurants and lively nightspots, art hops and summer festivals, coffeehouses and museums -- it's all right here, and The Kalamazoo House is right in the middle of it.
Restaurants
The Epic Bistro, a fusion restaurant located downtown on the Kalamazoo Mall, with a wine list of over 200 bottles (40+ by the glass!)
The Union Cabaret and Grill, a unique partnership between Western Michigan University's arts department and the Millennium Restaurant Group, with glorious food. Check out the live shows!
Food Dance Cafe, a restaurant focusing on organic, locally-grown produce with amazingly imaginative dishes.
Arie's London Grill Singapore -- go here for a tasty blend of Indian-styled dishes with a British touch.
Francois' Macaroni Factory, an Italian-focused restaurant with delicious food and an always-busy streetfront dining section.
District 211, housed in a beautiful renovation of an old warehouse, with modern cuisine and wonderful food combinations.
The Blue Dolphin, where you can get authentic Greek-centered cuisine for very reasonable prices.
Nightspots
Burdick's Bar and Grill, in the ground level of the stunning Radisson Plaza Hotel. A great place to watch some sports.
Monaco Bay Dueling Piano Bar -- need we say more? This piano bar is always hopping.
Ouzo's, a very European-feeling pub with excellent electronic music.
Bin 359, The Epic Bistro's bar. Fantastic wines and food make this a must see.
Papa Pete's, housed in the same building as The Blue Dolphin. The dancing here is a huge draw.
Rugger's Up and Under, a classic college bar with a dedicated dance area.
Olde Peninsula, a great place for enjoying a few ales (it's also a brewery) with some friends.
Nick's Tavern and Grill, a unique pub located in an old mansion, for your more subdued days.
Club Soda, an excellent venue to catch live music acts.
Breweries
The Kalamazoo Brewing Company, one of Kalamazoo's landmarks. Bell's beer is shipped far and wide due to its superb taste. A must see.
Kraftbrau, housed in another renovated warehouse in Kalamazoo, offers great, locally-made microbeers and lively music shows.
Art, Museums, and Theatre

The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, across from Bronson Park, consistently has top-notch plays and productions.
The Irving S. Gilmore Theatre, sponsored by WMU, is also a great place to catch a play.
Art Hop is an exciting community art event that occurs the first Friday of every month.
The Epic Center is where you want to go for lesser-known, more avant garde plays and productions.
Chenery Auditorium, yet another place to catch productions, has a beautifully antique interior with excellent acoustics.
The State Theatre is a well known venue for music and comedy concerts. The interior is a very pretty reproduction of a spanish castle courtyard under the stars.
