Introduction
The Topside Inn Bed & Breakfast is located on the highest point on McKown Hill and the panoramic view out to sea is one of the best in Maine. The front lawn provides a grandstand seat to observe harbor activity during the day and the lights of the sky at night.
Topside Inn's21 guestrooms include seven in the picturesque main house, and fourteen located in two quaint summer guesthouses. Most rooms have incredible views of the village, harbor, and ocean. The rest just have great views of the same thing. All rooms have private in-suite baths, cable TV and dial-out phone. The activities of our waterfront coastal village are just one block away.
Breakfast is included every day - beverages, fruit, cereals, baked goods, hot entrees and sides. Start your day slow and leisurely, or grab a muffin and coffee on your way to an early sail.
History
From this hilltop location, the McKown family watched over their shipyard and the comings and goings of the ships they built. When necessary, they catered to the lodging needs of the shipyard workers. Then, with the passing of the yard, the lodging business turned to the needs of summer visitors. Now, guests come year round to enjoy our beautiful location.
Throughout the years, each owner has continued the McKown family traditions - friendliness, informality and personal courtesy come naturally at Topside.
Things To Do
We are within short walking distance of the village's many restaurants, shops, galleries, the famous footbridge, and the waterfront piers - where you can take excursion boat trips ranging from an hour cruise to a full day at sea. Sail on a windjammer, search for whales, cruise the islands, take in a clambake, a sunset supper, a reggae cruise, or maybe, just a day of angling for the "big one". There is always something happening on the waterfront.
When you want to keep your feet on dry land, there's a bounty of choices from our central location at the top of the hill. Golfing at the Boothbay Region Country Club is only a short distance from town, and we have an exceptional YMCA facility. You can view the many lighthouses, explore secluded coves, visit the Midcoast Botanical Garden, or walk along the region's nature trails. And there's always a general store to find some lunch along the way.
