Introduction

Riverside Inn - East Machias, Maine

While we are unable to write the entire history of this house, we do know that two sea captains called it home—Captain William E. Elliott, in the mid-1800s, and Captain James F. Chase, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the main house (left, above) and the coach are available for stays.

We're located on U.S. Route 1 (the coastal highway) in East Machias, Maine, on the East Machias River. The East Machias is a tidal river that ebbs and flows with the changing tides, and serves as a sea-run for Atlantic salmon and shad. An eagle lives nearby, and seals and herons are seen frequently. You can walk the retired railroad tracks that run alongside the river, or sit comfortably in our small garden at river's edge and enjoy the view. The tides range from eighteen to twenty-eight feet on the coast in Washington County.

Relax in one of our smoke-free guest rooms; each contains a private bath, antiques, and cable TV. Borrow a book from our eclectic library.

Dining is one of the Epicurean pleasures. Please review our sample menu in the Dining Section. A made to order breakfast is included with the room rates.

Located nearby are the University of Maine at Machias, and historic sites such as Burnham Tavern Museum, Fort O'Brien State Historic Site, and F.D.R.'s summer house at Campobello Island. Experience the outdoors at Cobscook Bay State Park, Roque Bluffs State Park and golf course, and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. Hiking, birdwatching, beachcombing, and puffin tours are only minutes away at www.boldcoast.com

We are also less than a two hour drive to Acadia National Park, St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and Bangor International Airport, and about four hours from Portland.

We are listed in and recommended by the following guide books: The Coast of Maine Book · American and Canadian Bed & Breakfasts · Maine—An Explorer's Guide · The Maine Handbook · Maine Guide to Inns and Bed & Breakfasts · Maine Innkeepers Guide · Fodors New England

We hope you come and see us.
