A Rise And Shine Bed and Breakfast is a lovingly restored and elegant eight-bedroom, eight-bathroom home with a large screened farmer's porch, outdoor lounging deck, separate meeting/carriage house, and an outdoor dining patio overlooking Lake Cobbossee. The main house has twenty one rooms, including a library, informal breakfast room, formal dining room, game/music room, art galleries, a kitchen, and butler's pantry. It is not only a home away from home for visitors, but our guests may board their horses overnight in our adjoining stables/barns.
We overlook Lake Cobbossee, Maine's third largest lake - it has its own lighthouse! Guests may swim, fish, or boat, bring or rent boats, canoes, kayaks nearby and enter the Lake from the public boat launch (1.5 miles).
Our acreage is nature-rich and a tribute to the beauty of rural Maine. Guests may laze and gaze anywhere on the property, and will easily sight such wonders as the bald eagle, red fox, deer, moose, beaver, bobcat, hummingbirds, swallows, butterflies, hawks, loons, etc. You may tour the gardens, walk the woods paths, fish/swim/boat and/or hunt for wildflowers or berries amongst the acreage. (Any good amount of berries brought home is rewarded with a berry pie!)
The two barns and stables are the site of Hollywood movies related to horses, and townsfolk talk of this gracious home as a vacation retreat for many Hollywood stars, notably Martin Sheen, Raymond Burr, and Tom Cruise. The parties were major events in this small New England town.
The Helen C. Anderson Library
Named after our most endeared Monmouth grade school teacher, the library wainscoting and built-in bookshelves are from the grand Skyhawk Mansion formerly in Scarborough, Maine. The library is an elegant and cozy refuge where you can sit by the fire and peruse our book collection, watch early evening television or enjoy a taped movie. Double Size Sofa Bed/full mattress comfort. Half Bath, private.
Formal Living Room
Our formal living room gallery displays the paintings of Innkeeper/Owner, Lorette and local artist, the late Ruel Crocker. Sit in this Victorian parlor and become immersed in the many moods of art. Relax, watch the fire in the grand marbled fireplace. Chat, play cards/games, listen to soft music and/or sip a beverage in the round window seats.
Formal Dining Room (allergy free)
The smaller of our two dining rooms, this formal room is elegantly appointed with hand painted turn of the century antiques, chandelier, elegant silk topiaries, marbled lower walls, hand painted striped walls, silver and crystal serving ware. It is a truly elegant and relaxing dining space.
Breakfast Room Dining Area
A large sunny indoor room that looks/feels like an outdoor patio! Spectacular Lake and pasture view from this room. It is the more spacious and kid friendly of our dining areas and adjoins the kitchen where you can watch and chat with our friendly cook! It adjoins the sunny outdoor patio and garden and features the work of local artists.
Kitchen and Butler's Pantry
A unique and grand kitchen and pantry with original ovens and cabinets are lovingly restored.
Family Room/Music Room
Although usually the private sanctum of the Innkeepers, we often welcome guests to this large and informal room so that they might enjoy our resident Innkeeper's extensive singing talents or join a group to share popcorn in front of a movie. Guests may well share their talent or a sing along at our upright grand piano. (Trained pianists only, please). This large and bright room can easily seat twenty music lovers. Warning: Please bring your singing voice; we truly do like to encourage folks to sing along!
Farmer's Porch
Our large Vista farmer's porch is a great vantage point from which to watch the sunrise, ponder on the horses grazing in the pasture, leisurely sip a beverage or curl up with the newspaper or a good book. (We've been known to have unplanned naps here.) The porch is appointed with comfortable old and new wicker, garden implements, and it overlooks the flower garden, frog pond, and fountains. It is adjacent to the outdoor patio.
Patio
The patio is the perfect spot for viewing the sunrise, the lake and the surrounding countryside. Flower and herb gardens surround the cafe seating and a colorful variety of hummingbirds find it a favorite visiting spot. We have found that some guests are tempted to sample the herbs and we have even found our gardener guests weeding the flower garden! We love it when guests make themselves at home!
