Introduction
"Get away from it all in Acadia's best-loved village."
Located minutes from Bar Harbor in the timeless village of Northeast Harbor, this historic landmark, shingle style inn offers inviting comfort in quiet elegance at Acadia's doorstep. The individually decorated rooms have private baths, and are furnished with antiques and oversized beds. Maison Suisse enjoys easy access to all of Acadia's attractions from a convenient location in Acadia's best-loved village.
Maison Suisse, built as a Northeast Harbor summer cottage, has the eccentric charm and inviting interior spaces characteristic of the Shingle Style of architecture. Located right in the village of Northeast Harbor, Maison Suisse is set back from Main Street by a rustic garden. This garden is the legacy of a former owner, who came to this country from Switzerland and named the cottage "Maison Suisse." Maison Suisse has fireplaced "common rooms" for guests to enjoy, as well as outside garden seating.
The Maison Suisse has been recommended in Travel and Leisure, Glamour, A Woman's Day, USA Weekend and other publications.
Breakfast
Get an early start or sleep in late, eat hearty or continental. Your choice of breakfast (meal tax and tip) is included in the price of the room. For a more relaxed breakfast schedule and a broader menu selection, we provide for our guests' breakfasts at a restaurant (with on-site bakery) right across the street from the inn. A sit-down breakfast (full or continental) is available, throughout most of the season, from 6:30 until 11:00 a.m., and from 7:00 until 11:00 at season's end. If you would prefer to "get it to go," you can get a take-out continental breakfast instead, at the bakery/deli at the front of the restaurant.
The Village
Northeast Harbor is considered to be the most enchanting of Acadia's villages. An unspoiled Main Street has quality shops with old-fashioned hours and service. Golf, tennis, swimming, a botanical library and gardens open to the public are all nearby. A short walk from the inn is a small museum of local history and the public library with a "Maine" collection.
Just down the hill from Main Street, the beautiful harbor offers sailing, naturalist cruises, and excursion and ferry boats. Some of the loveliest and less-frequented sections of Acadia National park are to be found in Northeast Harbor. Paths and trails connect also to trails, open to the public, which traverse private lands. Down the street from the inn is a hiking trail which connects to trails right into Acadia.
Originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, the park's carriage trail system of dirt roads, closed to cars, provides excellent bike riding and easy hiking. Bike rentals are available locally, and horsedrawn carriage rides are available in neighboring Seal Harbor.
